Windows 7 Migration Project Management – Part 5 – Create a Windows 7 Migration Project Plan
Create a Windows 7 Migration Project Plan (Project Manager)
Now that you have a Project Manager (PM), he or she will be responsible for putting together a comprehensive project plan.
The plan will typically consist of 3 major phases:

i. Infrastructure Planning When planning a rollout over a network, you will need to set up a lab with certain components and infrastructure in place to support and enable the deployment. These components may include servers for deploying network shares, the actual Windows 7 media from which the deployment images will be prepared, Windows 7 user licenses, device drivers, media containing the applications that the company wishes to deploy and licenses for those applications.
ii. Test Planning Once the test lab has been set up and tested, it is time to install the actual workstation desktop with all applications and drivers, and begin exhaustive testing prior to the pilot deployment. A schedule will need to be drawn up for the testing, and IT and other resources have to be made available.
iii. Pilot Deployment Planning A Pilot Deployment is the comprehensive planning, designing, implementing and deployment of Windows 7 across one or several departments or business units. The distinction is that it is not a company-wide rollout. The reason for this is: you start small and deploy your application on only a subset of your company. That way, if things go wrong, you are easily able to either fix the mistakes with lessons learned or, in extreme cases, back out entirely with less egg on your face.
