Windows 7 Migration Project Management Part 4 – Appoint a Project Manager and create a Project Team

The steering committee should identify and approve the choice of a Project Manager. This is a key role that will, to a great extent, be responsible for the overall success (or failure) of the project.

The Project Manager should be a seasoned manager with a good understanding of both the organization and the technology. This individual should also be able to reach out to Microsoft as needed for technical or functional help.

The Project Manager will be primarily responsible for the creation of the project plan and the selection of the project team. For most projects, the team is typically composed of technical and functional staff members.

Technical members typically work on the technology-related pieces of the project while functional members work on the business side.

In general for more straightforward software packages like Windows 7, you will need more technical staff that may be either internal or external consulting resources.

Determining the necessity and quantity of external resources will be the job of the project manager.
